PHLug Reviews: 70805 Trash Chomper

Upon seeing the sets that LEGO would release for the LEGO Movie, I had my eyes locked in on the following sets. The Super Cycle Chase (70808), the Flying Flusher (70811), Ice Cream Machine (70804) and last but not the least the Trash Chomper.

Why the Trash Chomper? well it reminds me of one of my old sets from 1991 which is 6645 - Street Sweeper. Maybe its because they both deal with garbage or cleaning and both come with 2 minifigs.

Packaging

The Trash Chomper is one of those 2-in-1 sets available for the movie theme. The set retails at $29.99 and has 389 pieces (roughly $0.077/pc which is good imo). And as usual, the box was like any other lego the movie set..it has a glossy finish.

So the front part shows both alternative builds which is kinda cool plus the micro manager of course as it chases Gordon Zola. It gives the public the exact picture of what they are going to get out of this set.

The back part of the box again shows the 2 alternative builds plus the "playability" of the garbage trucks moving parts and of course the entire set. Also on the back part is a picture of the 3 minifigures that comes with the set.

The Content

Upon opening, the set comes with 3 instruction manuals, a sticker and 4 plastic bags of parts.

The first manual shows the regular garbage truck build. Then second one is for the assembly of the minifigures and the micromanager. And last but not the least is for the Trash Chomper.

The set is mainly composed of green parts, then some LBGs, a couple of orange plates, cheese slopes, tiles, technic bricks and pins. The parts are mainly common except for the 4pcs that makes up the back door of the garbage truck. Here is how the parts assortment looks like.

Minifigures

Gordon Zola

We start of with Gordon Zola the chef. The minifigure shows a lot of similarities to the chef from the classic town (chef007) but of course Gordon's mustache is a lot longer and has a scared look on his face because he is being chased by the micro manager. The head has a single print only. The torso print is a typical white double breasted jacket (typical chef attire) with detailed buttons. And the fig has his toque (chef hat). The leg part is grey in color (i hope they went for the checkered pants).

Garbage Man Dan

The 1st garbage man is "Dan". The minifigs head has a single print as well like Gordon. He wears a lime green vest over a blue "jumpsuit" attire and a blue cap. The vest is very detailed and even shows some dirt stains. One thing I find awesome is the vest has some sort of "reflectors" so people can see him when collecting garbage at night. The leg part is also blue in color and likewise it has nice details such as 2 front pockets and again, reflectors, along the knee area.

Garbage Man Grant

Last but not the least, garbage man "Grant". Grant's head has facial hair all around and unlike Dan who wears a cap, Grant wears a bonnet. In terms of attire, both Grant and Dan wear the same blue jumpsuit with a very detailed lime green vest.

The Build

I started doing the garbage truck as this seems to be my first "city" set like build in a long long time. The chassis of the garbage truck seems to be strong with a combination of plates to hold everything together.

The truck is slowly taking shape and the picture below shows the gears to make the back door of the truck move up, down and back.

I like how the front part of the truck was made. Very detailed grills, lights and bumper with the sticker plate number.

We're almost done. We just need to attach the back door, close the roof and add the sidings and the tires.

excellent "playability" on the back door

Let's go Dan and Grant!!
The Garbage Truck build was excellent. The details on the truck was on point and you can feel how tight and compact the design was. I'm sure city collectors have the same experience on the truck build but since this was my first time, I had a great time building it.

For the next build, we have the Micro Manager. The build was pretty straight forward and started by making the center piece that holds both sides of the "box" figure. Next would be creating the sides which flaps open and resemble as wings with hidden missiles.

Now we will be creating the front part of the Micro Manager. I guess that would be his eyes or radar or scanner probably?

And finally the finished Micro Manager with his arms wide open. Wings not yet deployed.

Now with the wings deployed, flicker missiles ready to fire

Here we see the Micro Manager chasing Gordon Zola...then we have Dan and Grant on the Garbage Truck trying to save Gordon.

As stated on the top part, the Trash Chomper reminded me of my old 6645 - Street Sweeper set from '91. So after 20+ years its out of the cabinet. (Pardon me for the dusty sweeper).

6645 - Street Sweeper with 70805 - Trash Chomper

Onto the 3rd build, the Trash Chomper!!

And so we dismantled the garbage truck to make the alternative build for this set. I initially thought that the garbage truck will transform into the Trash Chomper without dismantling it. But I was wrong....so here we go.

The mechanism is kinda different from the garbage truck but likewise, the trash chomper was still a solid build.

They made use of the garbage cans and filled it up with trash and attaches at the back of the Trash Chomper. So for the micro manager, heads up...bombs away!!
trash bombs!
The mouth of the chomper is ready to be attached.

Now that's a big mouth!
say Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Gordon Zola is again being chased by the Micro Manager...to bad the Trash Chomper was at the back and decided to munch on it.

Conclusion

The set was a pretty straight forward build with a little complexity on the technic side but still it was easy. I personally enjoyed working on both alternate builds. Lego did an excellent job on this set in my opinion because of the "playability" of the set. Both the garbage truck and the trash chomper design was on point and no parts felt loosely attached. The set has a nice assortment of parts though most of which are common. I also like the design of the torso for the garbage man since it was very detailed with the bonus of the "reflector" effect. As for chef Gordon Zola, I hope they considered changing the legs with a checkered effect and add another facial expression. But all in all, I would definitely buy the set.

Thanks to the Philippine Lego Users Group (PHLug) for giving me the opportunity to do a review on this set and of course thank you to the Lego CEE team for providing the LEGO Movie sets to the group.

.....and so the lovebirds Emmet and Wyldstyle stroll down while munching on some crispy fried chicken. Grant on the other hand was pickup the chicken bones. haha! Play on!
